CBSE Class 11, Class 12 students to learn Ayurveda, Indian architecture as a subject

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) schools will now teach Ayurveda, Indian architecture and philosophy as a subject to the class 11 and class 12 students.

According to a report in HT, “The subjects will be part of a new elective — Knowledge, traditions and practices of India — that will combine various disciplines such as mathematics, chemistry, fine arts, agriculture, trade and commerce, astronomy, surgery, environment, life sciences and will be offered in Hindi and English.”

Major changes introduced by CBSE this year:

On February 3, the Board had released the official notification of restoring the class 10 board exams from the academic session 2017-2018.

The Board remodeled assessment scheme of Class 10 Board examination. “The examination from academic year 2017-18 and onwards will be conducted according to the new model. Under the new scheme, students will have to study six subjects instead of the usual 5 subjects in class 10,”  the CBSE notice said.

CBSE dropped its academic electives and vocational subjects from the Class 12 syllabus. The Board had decided to take this decision due to fewer takers every year.

The Board scrapped Open Text Based Assessment (OTBA) for Class 9 and 11 from this academic year. Schools have given negative feedback to CBSE about OTBA system which was introduced from March 2014.

NEET exam to be held on May 7 in 103 cities

NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is conducting the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET)-2017 Exam on Sunday, May 7, at 1,921 examination centres in 103 cities across India.

The examination is being held in the offline mode and is being organized in 10 languages. NEET this year is open to NRIs, OCIs, PIOs and foreign students as well.

A total of 11,38,890 students are scheduled to appear in the examination. Among the examinees are 1,522 NRIs, 480 OCIs, 70 PIOs and 613 foreign students.

 AS many as 490 CBSE officials have been deployed to supervise the test centres in 103 cities across the country. In addition to city coordinators of CBSE schools, 3,500 additional observers have also been appointed to monitor the test centres.
 Earlier CBSE used to conduct the NEET only for 15% of the quota seats; the rest were conducted by the various States.
 This year, arrangements have been made for an integrated NEET examination. Of a total of 95,000 UG seats, 65,000 seats are set aside for MBBS and 25,000 seatsare for BDS in all government, private and deemed medical colleges and universities across the country.

HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar introduces major changes in school education

Union minister Prakash Javadekar has listed out the major changes to improve the education system in schools on Saturday.

Here’s a look at the changes proposed by the minister:

  • Two chances to pass the exam: A student will have two chances to clear the exam; the first exam will be held in March and the second one in June.”If he/she fails there, he/she will be detained in the same class,” the minister said
  • Class 10 compulsory: Making class 10 board exams compulsory for the students
  • Decision on detainment: “We have taken a very important decision and we will take a call on it this month. We had a meeting of education ministers from all the states, wherein those from 25 states lamented that they were finding it difficult to improve the quality of education without examinations,” said the minister. He further added, “On their demand, we unanimously decided that the right to decide on detention will be left to the states and it will be done anytime soon.”
  • To revise the NCERT books: For updating the book, the minister has asked the suggestions from teachers and parents to make changes
  • Handbooks system introduced:  Handbook system has been introduced for teachers to monitor the child’s performance.

The minister announced the changes while inaugurating the North-Eastern Region workshop on ‘Innovations and Best Practises in School Education’ organised by the HRD ministry.
