A 17-year-old national level junior kabaddi player has alleged that she was raped by a man in his thirties in northwest Delhi’s Model Town area on Saturday.
The teenager told police in her statement that on July 9 she was outside a stadium when the man, who runs a wrestling training centre, befriended her posing as a stadium official. She alleged that the man took her to a flat in Rohini on the pretext of introducing her to a few of his friends and then raped her.
The girl alleged that he served her drinks laced with sedatives after which she fell unconscious and realised later that she was sexually abused.
The girl approached police on Monday morning and said that she was traumatised because of which she could not approach police earlier. She alleged the man dropped her on a road outside the stadium and threatened to kill her if she reported the matter.
Police took the girl to a hospital for medical examination, which confirmed rape. Police are yet to make any arrests. Following her complaint, police have registered a case of rape and other sections of POCSO (Protection of children from sexual offences act) and have also detained the man.
“He was identified and has been detained. He is being questioned and will soon be put under arrest,” a police officer said.
According to the Delhi Police crime statistics, a rape case is reported every four hours in the city. In 2016, 2,155 cases of rape were reported. This year the number has already touched 930. The Delhi Police have released a tender inviting experts to conduct a sociological and psychological study on the causes of rape in Delhi.
